Beach Referee Certification Opportunity

USA-Volleyball is pleased to announce a combined ZONAL plus LOCAL Beach Officials’ Certification event. Interested students
should contact info@beachcommission.org immediately.
There are three course options for prospective students to consider:
Candidates should choose the most appropriate option based on their level of officiating
experience and personal preference.
**ALL candidates must attend the mandatory classroom session Friday evening.**
1. LOCAL CERTIFICATION:
• Candidates attend class Friday night; then officiate Saturday, with feedback from
Regional Staff, and from National Clinician (as possible).
• Successful candidates earn LOCAL rating and become eligible to officiate in
Region.
• Fee $75: Payable to Gulf Coast Region. Pay in person at the clinic on Friday 2/23.
• Note: Successful candidates may have an opportunity to work for pay on Sunday.
2. ZONAL CERTIFICATION:
Option 1: “CLINIC”
• Candidates attend Friday class, and take Beach Rules exam.
• Officiate all day Saturday under formal evaluation of National Clinician.
• Successful candidates earn USAV ZONAL beach rating and become eligible to
officiate most levels of play, including Collegiate.
• Fee $200: to be paid with USAV Application for Course.
• Note: Successful candidates may have an opportunity to work for pay on Sunday.
Option 2: “Two-Day CAMP”
• Candidates attend Friday Class, and take Beach Rules exam.
• Officiate all day Saturday with feedback from Regional and National Clinicians.
o A great experience for growth.
• Debrief Saturday evening with Clinicians.
• Officiate Sunday under formal evaluation of National Clinician.
• Successful candidates earn USAV ZONAL beach rating and become eligible to
officiate most levels of play, including Collegiate.
• Fee $300: to be paid with USAV Application for Course.
Additional Information:
• As a candidate, you’ll work as R1, R2, Scorer and Line-Judge. On the beach you
are an OFFICIAL - we do it all!
• Don’t stress! This is a teaching environment . . . LOCAL candidates "always
succeed!”
• Almost all ZONAL candidates succeed. For those who don’t quite get there with
their Zonal Certification, still earn LOCAL.

• Watch the PowerPoint training(s) we have to offer, at LINK.
• The single issue that “trips up” our candidates most often is SCORING. Although
we use a scoresheet very similar to the USAV indoor scoresheet, it’s different in
some important ways. The real key is learning to score “on auto-pilot” while you
whistle. The key to this is practice!
o Print a couple of scoresheets.
o Practice scoring at home, watching any old match on you-tube.
o The hardest job is to score while acting as R2!
o Give yourself a great head start by practicing scoring before you arrive.
• We’ll finish each day with a short meeting to discuss what we’ve learned, what
we need to focus on, and what our plan for the next day is.
• Did we mention that we do have a Rules Exam?
o We do, but don’t fret, we use the exam as a tool to help you learn!
Food & Refreshments:
• We highly recommend you bring snacks "to tide you over” during what can be a
long, hot day.
